This article aims at exploring, through the lens of American press, the shaping of the urban design discourse in the United States between the ‘40s and the early ’70s. The magazines offer an interesting insight on the topic, becoming a site of construction of the urban design discourse and a platform for the exchange with practitioners and a wider public. Popular press, academic journals, institutional publications as well as trade and professional magazines, contributed - at various levels - to vehiculate the discussion and the conflicts that marked the definition of the urban design discourse. This overview offers a new insight on the institutions, places, biographies and topics that will constitute the bases of the discipline in the us. The article provides a multifaceted portrait of authors, trajectories and places, that contribute to define the boundaries of the discipline, helping us to reassess a number of consolidated accounts.
