The idea of "pair of opposites" appears in Freud’s thinking as early as 1905 and occupies a significant place at various theoretical levels throughout his work, from the major antitheses to the instinctual dualisms. This clinical communication presents the analytical process of a young man with complaints of distress associated with separation, a case that renders the work of the pair of opposites especially visible. Following the patient’s major preoccupations of cross dressing and music, the concept of disavowal is discussed on different levels. The article elaborates on how the fragments of self and the different orders of trauma - the sociopolitical trauma and the trauma of sexuality itself - are entangled in the phenomenon of dressing up.
