The essay traces the history of the University of Catania starting from its institution in the fifteenth century. After outlining the long-term processes that, in the name of the Enlightenment and state control, characterized European universities between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the essay focuses on two salient phases of the reforms that concerned the University of Catania at the turn of the two centuries.
