The essay reconstructs the story of the Higher Institute of Commercial Studies, brought to Catania in 1920 as a "rib" of the Faculty of Law, but destined to become the ancestor of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, which will finally be established in 1935. The Institute is immediately characterized by a great relevance: it is a center of international experimentation of models and economic theories applied to the Italian Mezzogiorno, it is able to attract leading players of the Italian and European scene, it is also the symbol of the political transformations that invest Italy in the transition from the liberal state to fascism.

Keywords: Economy, trade, Mediterranean, fascism, politic.
