In this article the Italian validation of the Personal Authority in the Family System-questionnaire (PAFS-q) is introduced as a suitable tool for assessing change in multigenerational family psychotherapy. Starting from the theory on the development of Personal Authority, Donald Williamson, the pioneer of family therapy and other researchers have developed and built a questionnaire with the aim of measuring the position of the individual with respect to its intergenerational relational context. PAFS-q has proven to be a valuable tool in measuring important aspects of systemic and family theories by guiding and supporting clinical work with families. The applications of this tool are encouraging, from reading into the difficulties of the intimacy of the couple, the sharing of parental responsibilities up to the study of the psychological factors that influence the sine causa infertility and the process of Medically Assisted Procreation, yet equally important will be the use of this tool if it is found to contribute to the International recognition of the work of family therapists.
