From the beginning the Communities had the objective of playing an international role and wanted to communicate it to third countries, relying on the successes of integration. The Eec soon became a huge commercial and economic bloc, relevant at an international level, despite the diffi culties on the political one. The political communication outside was very fragmented and imprecise, but aimed to present an active Eec in the global sphere. The European Commission Information Service was the instrument chosen for this communication and it devoted particular attention in building a coherent and strong image of integrated Europe.
