The essay describes the land reclamation and colonization plans elaborated in the 1920s by Fascism as a tool for the Italianization of South Tyrol. These plans, conceived by nationalist and post-irredentist circles, were not actually implemented. This failure can be explained by the regime’s need not to compromise international relations with Germany and Austria, by the ability of the South Tyrolean landowners to mobilize against the ex-propriation plans, and by the existence in Italian institutions of different positions on the best way to nationalize South Tyrol.
