Starting from the features of those particular social formations constituted by religious confessions, the article aims to investigate how the issue of the relationship between the protection of individual freedoms and the safeguarding of confessional autonomy is dealt with within them, in particular in the light of the new needs of the multicultural society. The latter, in fact, requiring the legal system to consider new possible profiles of infringement of the individual inviolable rights within religious groups, renew the debate on the appropriateness of the existence of collective rights of religious confessions, despite the functionality of this category of rights to achieve the constitutional goal of the development of the individual personality.
