Gabriele Turi starts this article by summarising his earlier judgments of the Treccani Encyclopedia, edited by Giovanni Gentile. He emphasises how his previous approach failed to fully capture the precise nature of Fascism as expressed in the culture of the regime. For this reason, he now takes a holistic approach to the work of the Institute for the Italian Encyclopedia. This body went through major institutional and political changes in the years 1931-1933, when it was transformed into an organisation of national interest and co-opted the highest authorities of Fascism onto its administrative board. Proof of this shift is provided by the Political Dictionary of the Pnf, published in 1940, whose entries on "corporativism" and on the "Cult of the Littorio" demonstrate its ambitions to present itself an expression of «fervid Fascist activity».
