In 1972 the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Unche), and the publication of the report The Limits to Growth, were a key moment in the construction and the collective perception of the environment as a planetary issue. For a long time the historiography has interpreted this shift as a result of the commitment of concerned scientists, combined with the movement "from below" of the early environmental movement. More recent research has proposed a more complex picture, in which the construction of the movement is seen as a consequence of the strategies of numerous different actors - above all from outside the environmentalist camp - and which date back to the years immediately following World War II. From this perspective the events of 1972 are contextualised within new historical frameworks, and so assume new meanings.
