The last two decades have seen a succession of economic and political crises that each time seemed to decree the end of the system of international trade and production relations that we call globalization. Yet, despite the problems created by the lack of adequate governance, the engine of globalization based on the knowledge economy has not been extinguished at all, today strengthened by digital technologies and the growth of intangibles. The article considers the different stages of the processes of international economic integration, discussing the reasons for its slowdown and the dangers of its abrupt halt. However, the main objective is to analyze the role assumed by "places" in global knowledge capitalism, which a superficial reading tends to consider less and less significant. On the basis of some recent studies, we intend instead to propose the idea that the territories of production - cities, districts, metropolitan spaces - are destined to assume a strategic role in the processes of economic, social and technological development.
