This contribution analyzes the transformation that has affected the model of industrial districts to highlight the current challenges and implications for the Italian context and in particular for the regions of the Northeast. Beginning from the opportunities that have offered the global value chains in the activation of processes of upgrading, it comes evidenced the role of the territorial context like support to innovative manufacturing processes. It will show as the technological evolution connected to the fourth industrial revolution has strengthened the district model, amplifying the potential of connection and relation of the district firms with just the market, from always forerunner of innovative processes and construction of value tied to the symbolic and experiential dimension (made in Italy productions). The future challenges that the territory of the Northeast will be called to face are presented. The contribution draws on the results of studies that the authors have developed over the last 20 years of research on the subject.
