The recollection of a CGIL executive from Catania takes stock of the two different phases of building trade union’ activity in Catania at the end of the last century. Differences are found both for the acquired awareness of the Mafia danger and for the relationship with the major companies, headed by the so-called "cavalieri" (eng. "knights"). It is outlined the difficult path taken to free the union activity from the subalternity to the "business modernization" ideology and to reaffirm the compatibility between the protection of workers and the defense of the rule of law and environment. This line of action would enable the dialogue with local authorities and the revitalization of the building field in the face of the crisis caused by the cavalieri’s collapse.
