The article investigates the relationship existing between the enforcement of competition law by National Competition Authorities (NCAs) and the hierarchical centralized system overseen by the European Commission. If, on the one hand, the national enforcement of antitrust law embodies a structural feature of the European Competition Network as outlined by Regulation 1/2003, on the other hand a major risk exists, that this system might ultimately fragment the approach to anti-competitive dynamics in the European Market. To inspect which role NCAs - and the Italian AGCM - will play in forthcoming years, the analysis of digital markets is identified as a pivotal perspective to under-stand how to preserve NCAs’ flexibility and experimentalism while at the same promot-ing harmonization at the European level.
