This paper attempts to analyse a particular aspect of transitional justice in Trieste in 1945. The focus is on the local Popular Court (Tribunale del popolo) which was responsible for prosecuting crimes of fascism and collaboration committed during the war and, in particular, during the Nazi occupation of the city (1943-1945). The Popular Court celebrated trials between May and June of 1945 and was active in investigations until July; its activity was very important in the transition of judicial bodies from Yugoslav occupation to Allied occupation in Venezia Giulia. This pa-per analyses the actions and targets of the Court in the perspective of political jus-tice. With the help of many original documents, the paper studies the trials and the available staff. The study of the trials shows that the experience of the Popular Court was unique in Italy; it also shows aspects of continuity and discontinuity between the activity of the Popular Court and that of the Corte d’assise straordi-naria (Special criminal court) of Trieste, which prosecuted crimes of collaboration in Trieste after the Popular Court.
