Peace-war-conflict: the answers of a historian. War sets out to eliminate the plu-rality of individual and collective existence, difference, alterity. War, fed by the utilitarian rationality of the modernity, makes individuals perfectly anonymous and, therefore, exclusively functional to a senseless killing machine. In an evolving and inclusive society, that is based on the generation of active citizenship, conflict is instead an integral part in emancipatory processes. It is, however, about returning the politics its role of civil and social telos, not with a generic call to participation, but with the acceptance that a critical thinking will be needed to establish ethical communities based on solidarity. Within them, conflict could be not a lacerating element but a generative factor of non-exclusivist be-longings.
