Among the records of the State Archive of Rome, the so-called Congregazione del Buon Governo series boasts a collection of evidence concerning Fano and its harbour. The port of Fano, in fact, had been completely transformed along the centuries under the auspices of the Papal government, due to its strategic position on the Adriatic Sea at the end of via Flaminia, which was the most important pedestrian road to the Urbe. One of the last folders deals with the debate that took place at the beginning of the 19th century about the renovation of the dock area, just some years before the dissolution of the Papal States at Napoleon’s request. This attempt testifies the importance of the harbor for the nation. Local and papal businesses depended on this infrastructure. Hydrostatic technicians, papal experts and public officials took part in the discussion, including the captain Giuseppe Castagnola, Pietro Zara, Virginio Bracci and Andrea Vici.
