Nationalism has once again become a defining feature in today's global poli-tics. The essay retraces the history of its interpretations and tries to verify the sta-tus of the problem. It reconstructs the long development of studies (from the clas-sical liberal and Marxist readings to the proposals of the social sciences related to the theory of modernization, G.L. Mosse’s analyses, the modernist and ethno-symbolist turns of the 1980s, and post-modern interpretations). The author pro-poses a final appraisal of the central explanations and reflects on the elements of continuity and discontinuity in the views centered on nineteenth- and twentieth-century classical nationalism and those that instead look to contemporary popu-lism.
