Starting from the pinnacle of clinical experience, the author demonstrates, through several case studies, how the psychoanalytic model can be applied in work settings such as nursing homes. The hypothesis is that psychoanalytic thought, by conferring meaning, can help support the therapist in work situations that involve close contact with pain, allowing him to continue inhabiting psychic places and situations at the limits of knowledge and the limits of pain itself. Specifically, the author demonstrates how psychoanalytic elements, such as the construction of the setting and the containment function, allow him to name distressing and painful experiences. The clinical experiences describe clinical work with elderly people in residential settings: specifically, with a patient affection from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, who seems unable to cope with pain, and the clinical work with a patient diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. In the final section, the author explores the possible relationship with pain.
Keywords: pain, setting, containment function, elderly, degenerative disease.
