The essay investigates the origins of the intense activity surrounding the archives of the Italian Resistance, focusing on the early phase of the recovery and organisation of archival materials for historical purposes This initial mobilization, which laid the foundations for subsequent developments, not only responded to conservation needs but was also deeply rooted in the political, cultural, and social dynamics of the immediate postwar period. There were many reasons for this: from the construction of a public memory to the legitimization of new leadership, t the support of justice and nascent historiography. The contribution therefore analyzes the complex, often nonlinear and competitive dynamics of this first race for documents, which is fundamental for interpreting the current archival heritage of the Resistance.
