Over recent decades, the Valtellina Valley has positioned itself as a ‘niche of excellence’: an area that, while outside the primary international trade routes, is integrated into global value chains thanks to its highly specialized productions. This article explores how this dynamic is connected to mechanisms for protecting agrifood trademarks and the capacity for innovation among small and mediumsized manufacturing enterprises. The findings reveal a virtuous process that nonetheless relies on fragile foundations, highlighting the need for targeted initiatives to enhance territorial services.
