This article discusses the main results of the exploitation of a data bank dedicated to house names and shop signs in Lyons from the 16th to the 18th century, gathering 1586 items. First, the study exposes what were the institutional rules, then describes the material diversity of signs, their thematical diversity, their hierarchy of colors. The main results are a strong link between the signs density and the urban social geography – the boards being concentrated in the hospitality and trade wards, but being scarcely visible in the popular wards – the numerical weight of religious, animal and political themes, the specificity of suburbs. Overall, the evolution of rules and practices lead to a deep modification of urban landscapes.
