This contribution addresses the economic dimension of political exile, using the Lom--bardo--Venetian Kingdom as a case study. On the one hand, it outlines the Austrian legislation and the specific measures enacted for the Italian provinces of the Austrian Empire. From the beginning of the 19th century to the post--1848 period, these mea--sures regulated the instruments of confiscation and seizure of the property of political convicts. On the other hand, the authors focus more closely on the paths taken by some political emigrants to America, especially in relation to the access to and management of their assets during a brief but significant period of time: namely, the early years of the reign of Emperor Ferdinand I, marked by two important amnesties (1835 and 1838) granted as acts of detente after a harsh period of political trials.
Keywords: exile, emigration, confiscation, seizure, political crimes, amnesty.
