The essay describes a first step, that has just been taken, within the strategy developed in the emblematic research project ‘The Roots of an Identity’ (2018-2022): the creation of an architectural restoration/extension for social housing, developed with the aim of revitalizing the medieval district of Polaggia, a village located halfway up the Rhaetian side of the Valtellina, a few kilometers from Sondrio. By reinterpreting the identified elements of local identity, the project sought to achieve a harmonious renewal of all the surrounding architectural spaces and structures. The development of this approach, explored in depth at a local level, has now converged in a new research project (2024-27), that sees territoriality on a larger scale as the real challenge to be addressed in the ‘intermediate lands’.

Keywords: architectural restoration/integration; active academic research; revitalization of mountain villages
