Just as Catania has been the subject of continuous literary representations, so its main religious feast, the procession dedicated to Saint Agatha, has attracted the attention of various writers and travellers. The paper proposes a review of literary descriptions of the feast starting with the literature of the Grand Tour d’Italie in which the pages of Jean Houël stand out. Also of interest are a text by Capuana, a novella by Verga, La coda del diavolo (The Devil’s Tail), mentioned in De Roberto’s guide dedicated to Catania (1907), and Carlo Levi’s unique hints in Le parole sono pietre (Words are Stones). De Roberto’s guide, published by the Istituto di Arti Grafiche di Bergamo in the series of «illustrated monographs» directed by Corrado Ricci, is also a valuable phototextual document of the procession. Each of the writers projects his own cultural and interpretative paradigms into the great religious festival in Catania, highlighting certain aspects of it.
