Watzlawick’ s fourth axiom of communication establishes that human communication is divided into verbal and non-verbal, or rather that it is composed of analogue codes and numerical codes. The axiom was stated in 1967 when the world of smartphones with its varied forms of communication possibilities did not exist, yet this axiom is also valid when applied to online messaging. Nowadays, many communications between psychotherapist and patient take place through the use of messaging software which psychotherapists must learn to use as an integral part of the therapeutic relationship.

Keywords: online messaging, emoji, content, analog.
