After an Introductory note, some developments that led to the regulation of psychotherapy in Italy under Law 56/1989 are critically examined. Among other things, the dynamics of submission and membership in certain psychoanalytic associations are highlighted, as well as the issue of the number of weekly sessions as an attempt to differentiate between different associations. In this context, an excerpt from an Editorial published in issue 5/1962 of the journal Archivio di Psicologia, Neurologia e Psichiatria is reproduced, and references are made to Erich Fromm’s 1941 book, Escape from Freedom, and to Theodor W. Adorno et al.’s 1950 classic, The Authoritarian Personality.
