This thematic issue investigates the role of freight railways as a fundamental infrastructure in the organisation and transformation of urban and rural territories across the period 1840–2000. Addressing a persistent historiographical gap, the relative neglect of goods transport compared to passenger mobility, the volume demonstrates that freight trains, marshalling yards, industrial sidings, and secondary railways were decisive agents in shaping urban morphology, rural land usage, and even logistics systems. The collection, containing both Italian and Spanish articles, adopts a progressive shift in observational scale, moving from broad comparative frameworks to regional and urban case studies. Contributions examine freight installations in European cities (Santos y Ganges, Lalana Soto), the history of intermodality and logistics in Italy (Giuntini), Italian freight operations between 1885 and 1915 (Maggi), secondary railways in Sicily and their role in internal--area development (Pappa), and the evolution of Milan’s freight infrastructure between 1840 and 1908.

Keywords: Railway History, Urban History, Freight Transport, Logistics, 19th--20th Century.
