This article compares the Vindiciae contra tyrannos (1579), one of the earliest and most systematic articulations of a contractualist right to resistance, and Spinoza’s political philosophy, with particular attention to the role of indignation and vengeance. While in the Vindiciae these affects are subordinated to a transcendent theological framework and legitimized only when mediated by institutional figures such as the ephors, in Spinoza they appear as immanent expressions of power dynamics. Through a textual and conceptual analysis of these two models, the article reconstructs two distinct ways of articulating the relationship between affects and law, highlighting the originality of Spinoza’s political ontology.
