The author offers some food for thought about the relationships between the free intellectual professions, the legal order and the organisation of society, arguing that the theories developed to date, which generally refer to the legal and healthcare professions, do not appear to explain why certain professional activities obtain certain benefits when their professional status is recognised, such as the right to exert a restrictive practice over the labour market, while others that are of no less importance for the organisation of society do not, and then moves on to point to some possible directions for research, including the empirical field.
