During the last fifteen years the Russian government has promoted a systematic review of the Soviet past in a patriotic direction and restricted the space for debate on modern Russian history in the country. This policy, developed at various levels (by rewriting textbooks, launching patriotic media campaigns etc.), has impinged upon the work of historians, influencing their judgements.
