An Economic Analysis of the Biotechnologies Applied to Agriculture - The paper is a review of the work presented at the conference held in Rome on 17th and 18th of June 1999, with the title: The Shape of the Coming Agricultural Biotechnological Transformation: Strategic Investment and Policy Approaches from an Economic Perspective. Organized by the University of Rome "Tor Verga ta" and by the Icabr (International Consortium on Agricultural Biotechnology Research), the conference was attended by numerous prestigious scholars. The review ranges over the themes of the conference, which are at present the subjects of considerable debate and controversy: intellectual property rights, cooperation between agricultural public and private research systems, the "life science" industry structure, the effect of bovine growth hormone on world milk production, the social acceptability of biotechnological products, regulation of trade of genetically modified products and labelling, and the impact of biotechno - logies on Third World countries and the environment.
