Computer assisted interviewing and remote data collection systems are more and more widespread for official data collection. In statistically advanced countries, these channels are more frequently used than paper and pencil interviewing, particularly for repeated interviews of panels of respondents. Among interviewing methods, computer-assisted telephone interviewing (Cati) is completely automatic. Not only interviewing process is automatic, but also sample selection, call scheduling, response control and supervision of field activities. Less frequent for official statistics is computer-assisted face-to-face interviewing (Capi), even if pilot experiences show analogous positive trends for future use. Computer assisted self-interviewing (Casi) stepped forward along with Internet expansion. As far as official statistics is concerned, self completion of questionnaires accessible from the web may be applied to surveys on establishments and on selected populations accustomed to technology use (for instance, graduates). In this paper, we discuss the advantages and the methodological and practical limitations of the possible application of computer assisted surveys to the Italian official statistics system.
