This work highlights the value of recourse to family therapy as an incubator capable of fostering the working-through of primitive parts that are blockingdevelopment in cases of anorexia where the rejection of relationships appears unyielding and the urgency of the symptoms is uncontainable. In reviewing the literature on psychoanalysis and that on family therapy, we have noted the elements making symbolization (and thus the analytical relationship) difficult for these patients and we have discussed themas they relate to the anorexic family’s mental functioning. The presentation of a clinical case has made it possible for us to describe how family therapy can function as an incubator for the purposes of developing the vital functions necessary for starting the separation-individuation process that makes family and individual mental development possible.

Keywords: Anorexia, symbolization, trans-generational, family therapy, psychoanalytic therapy.
