The article aims to assess potentialities and limits of trade unions and professional organisations supplying representation for independent professionals. Many of these professionals are experiencing particularly fragile social and working conditions: they are marginally included in the welfare system and face a radically changing labour market and a persistent economic crisis. The analysis takes advantage of theoretical approaches in the field of Industrial Relations and Organizational Studies. The results of a recent research project on young professionals and the lack of representation are the starting point for the analysis of three case studies (ACTA, ReRePre, Board of Professions-CGIL); through focused interviews the organizational strategies, repertoires of actions and ongoing experimental coalitions are explored.
