During the Nazi occupation (1943-1945), Friuli was incorporated into the Operationszone Adriatisches Küstenland (Ozak). The essay proposes new interpretations on a regional scale relative to the violence that took place in Friuli, in the light of the data that emerged from the national project Per un Atlante delle stragi naziste e fasciste in Italia. The analysis of the Friulian case, isolated from other territories under the jurisdiction of the Ozak, permits an investigation of the particular dynamics of an area located in a strategic position in relation to the occupied areas of North-eastern Italy. The region, hit by major massacres by the summer of 1944, was characterised by diffused and widespread violence, directed with particular brutality against the partisans and civilians considered to be connected with the Resistance movement, but with discontinuous forms in comparison to that of Istria or the front line nearby.
