The article analyses the exercising and claiming of citizenship from below, carried out by the associations of migrant women in southern Spain (Andalusia). Drawing on an ethnographic study, the analysis shows how the participants act in the public sphere and forge a complex identity, in which gender and migrant status are inter-twined with ethno-cultural and class membership. From this position, they put for-ward a fundamental demand for inclusion, but also a redefinition of citizenship in inclusive terms. They question the boundaries between citizens and non-citizens, and redefine citizenship as a question of access to rights and resources, recognition and participatory parity. The case study aims to contribute, from an intersectional perspective, to the understanding of the forms of citizenship from below which are elaborated by diversified sectors of the migrant population, and the comprehen-sion of the related transformations of citizenship.

Keywords: citizenship from below; grassroots associations; inclusive citizenship; intersectionality; migrant women; Southern Europe.
