This article introduces a collection of essays on the environmental history of Sicily presented at the first National Congress of the Italian Society of Environmental History (Catania 2022). The first part, starting with J. R. McNeill’s classic definition of environmental history, analyzes its themes and methodologies, focusing on the concept of the Anthropocene. The second part outlines its institutionalization process, from its beginnings in the 1970s in America to, through a brief global overview, the Italian context and the birth of Sisam.
