Il training psicoanalitico dovrebbe integrare sistematicamente una attenzione per la ricerca empirica e per il pensiero critico. Viene ripercorsa la tradizionale diffidenza della psicoanalisi verso la ricerca empirica, mostrando come l’affidamento quasi esclusivo alla ricerca clinica e alla opinione di figure autorevoli abbia limitato il progresso della disciplina. Pur riconoscendo i limiti della ricerca empirica, ne viene sottolineato il valore nel verificare ipotesi, correggere errori e arricchire la pratica clinica, soprattutto attraverso gli studi sul processo e su casi singoli rigorosamente documentati. Il training psicoanalitico dovrebbe preparare gli allievi alla discussione critica dei risultati delle ricerche, favorire il confronto tra prospettive teoriche diverse e offrire una maggiore apertura ai contributi delle altre discipline e delle scienze sociali. Solo una cultura della verifica e del dubbio può garantire vitalità e credibilità alla psicoanalisi.
