In the spring of 1989, thanks to the joint efforts of York University Ontario (Canada) and of the Dipartimento di Scienze Economiche University of Pisa, an international Conference was held in Pisa on the subject of "Export-Led Growth, Uneven Development and State Policy - The Cases of Canada and Italy".
It has seemed interesting and useful to gather in a collective volume all the contributions, revised and updated in autumn 1980, of Italian scholars to the symposium.
The resulting book contains a deep and thorough analysis of the most recent trends of the Italian economy, covering such relevant topics as State macroeconomic policy, balance of payments constraints, trade performance, uneven development, labour market dynamics, industrial strategies, exchange rate and common market policies.
The collection of essays, besides providing a stimulus to reexamine the most recent experience, may be useful in evaluating the growth prospects of the Italian economy in the near future.
