In 1999, the General Direction for Territorial Coordination (DICOTER) of the Ministry of Public Works gave the Network for Town Planning Archives (RAPU) the task of reorganizing the DIOCOTER archives of town planning. RAPU, a project started by the Triennale of Milano in 1994, aims at creating a digital archive of Italian town planning documentation. In the first part of the paper, features and peculiarities of the catalogued materials and the methods of digitalization are described. The second part of the essay outlines different research perspectives and discusses the concept (not only from a historiographical point of view) of a history of the techniques used in urban studies. Recognition of the cumulative character of urban planning, in fact, represents an important condition for conscientious, refined, and effective practical projects.
