In Italy surgical site infections are on average 20% of all hospital infections. Since they involve damage to the health of patients and significant economic implications for the health system, it’s necessary to reduce their frequency. Hospital monitoring has proved to be an effective tool in reducing the frequency of hospital infections (NNIS, USA, 2000). For this reason there are numerous recommendations for their identification, classification and prevention. In Presidio Ospedaliero Centro Fondi-Terracina each year are performed about 4.000 surgeries, and for this reason it was necessary to find a system of surveillance of surgical site infections, which includes the follow-up to avoid complications as more as possi- ble. The overall target of the study is to assess the impact of SSI on Surgery Organizational Units, identifying the key risk factors and implementing effective preventive care.
