After describing how along the historical course of world feeding the search for quality food is increasingly shaping, with a "return to ancient appreciations" - the essay analyzes the Community discipline on geographic indications, considering in particular, its coherence and effectiveness. Geographic indications should also pursue aims of market transparency, having to enable consumers to make aware choices, but in the perspective of a more flexible approach to the origin, such objective turns out to be achieved in eventual and indirect way, not being possible to exclude a risk of confusion or error of the consumer. This could be avoided only through a combined and coordinated reading of the field disciplines. The legislator should act with coherent and effective rules which, qualifying the whole sector, not only achieve a full and correct communication in the market, but protect the consumer’s expectations regarding the product quality.
