Hospital emergency unit activities imply a regular confrontation with suffering. In this survey 59 nurses and 50 doctors were studied from three Emergency Rooms of Liguria using: 1) a questionnaire on motivation and on emotions felt by the operators during their work, 2) the Eysenck Personality Inventory scale 3) the Maslach Burnout Inventory scale. Emotional uneasiness resulted depending on the motivation, on the feelings, on neuroticism, and length of service. Considering the results together one can conclude that motivation, emotion and personality have an important role in sustaining the work of people in emergency health services. A constant reflection on the resources of people working in the emergency health services can be useful for identifying in time, situations that, if not followed up, can bring about a state of psychological discomfort and prevent the development of burnout.
