Grief and family system. a trigenerational approach - This article intends to show how the utilization of the resources of the family of origin can be crucial to unlock unsuccessful therapy processes or a therapeutic impasse, also during a family therapy conducted with the nuclear family group. Despite being the family the natural place to work through a loss, there have been more psycodynamic authors than those systemic-relational to approach this subject. We describe some theoretical contributions of both psychoanalysts and systemic family therapists. During a consultation of a very serious case of pathological mourning in one of the parents of an only son died in tragic circumstances, the author convoke the families of origin of both parents and in an already proven trigenerational format can foster the family resources that promotes a therapeutic improvement. From an immediate followup at 3 months and another 7 years later we were able to see a recovery of a serious disease and the birth of a near normal development of mourning in the parental couple.
