The need for a new model of training for teachers led in Italy, ten years ago, to the creation of postgraduate teaching schools (Ssis). As far as the teaching of history is concerned, these new schools were expected to build a new disciplinary knowledge, with its own scientific research and teaching practice. Most Ssis unfortunately missed their aim. there were, however, a few positive experiences, which produced interesting and original blueprints for the training of history teachers. Now Ssis have been closed by the Ministry, but we need to proceed along the same path beyond their level of achievement.
