This essay covers the history of the energy issue in Italy since the 1973 oil crisis up to the Chernobyl disaster of 1986, focusing primarily on the positions held by the Republican institutions, the political parties and the public opinion with regard to the Italian "nuclear adventure" and the potential ecological impact of their respective proposals. The A. examines in particular the evolution in the attitude toward such issues adopted over that lapse of time by the top exponents of the Italian social-communist Left, that is to say of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), the Italian Socialist Party (PSI), the Italian General Confederation of Labour (CGIL) and the Italian Labour Union (UIL). These organizations showed keen interest in the energy issue, being above all concerned about the occupational repercussions of the decisions taken in the field, but although many a voice of the social-communist Left spoke up for the anti-nuclear campaigns, it cannot be said that the Italian labour movement as a whole was able to understand the importance of the confrontation on the ecological matter.
