Claudio Donati was familiar with the complex structures of the Holy Roman Empire and of the Habsburg Monarchy and the historical problems involved feature largely in the different strands of his scholarly production. The broad-ranging studies he devoted to the Principality of Trento, a territory under Habsburg sovereignity, to the influence of Muratori and to Maria Theresa’s and Joseph II’s reforms, were followed by his research into the military activity of the Italian nobility in the service of the Empire. Many book-reviews by Donati also bear witness to his unflagging interest in Austrian historiography and in the methodological questions it raised.
