The last chapter of Claudio Donati, L’idea di nobiltà, secoli XIV-XVIII (1988) offers a penetrating survey of the Lombard and Milanese nobility in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and of the debates it engendered. This chapter and subsequent contributions by Donati are examined by Capra on the basis of a first-hand knowledge of the sources and of the problems involved.
