This essay focuses on some recent Italian translations of A.C. Danto’s works and traces the guidelines of his philosophy of art with particular reference to the following points: i) the thesis that, if two "indiscernible" things can belong to different philosophical categories (art and reality), an "aesthetic" theory of art (a theory of imitation, a theory of illusion, formalism, etc.) is impossibile. ii) the particular conjuction of "essentialism" (the definition of necessary and sufficient conditions of art) and "historicism" (with reference to the Hegelian philosophy of art). These are the principles that inform Danto’s approach to such problems as the relationship between philosophy and art, art and reality (or works of art and mere real things), the thesis of the "end of art" and the question of the post-historical art.
